Snow Stoppers – Advise Your Customers!

Here's a story that happened to me just recently.

I installed a roof window during the summer, in a brand new metal sheet roof covering.

I suggested to the guy that we also install some ice and snow stoppers, knowing that - especially with metal sheet covering - things can get nasty during the winter. But the sun was shining, and the customer always knows best, so I didn't push it. And he didn't get them installed.

And now, just a few days ago, I was having a beer with a friend (also a roofer) and he says to me:

"I’ve just fixed your roof window."

"How come?" As you can imagine, I was a bit surprised.

"Yeah, it was installed on a north side in a metal sheet covering and got smashed by an ice avalanche. The guy was really pissed off about not having ice stoppers."

"Great", I thought to myself. "What a stupid way to lose a customer."

So, everybody – if your customer says no to snow and ice stoppers in the summer, make sure you remind him about them in the winter, or another roofing company will install them for you :)

Anyway, luckily it was just a window that broke. Imagine what would have happened if the ice fell into his yard, when somebody was underneath...
